This introductory class is designed for anyone who wishes to have regular opportunities to learn and practice a variety of helpful qigong techniques. These gentle exercises have sometimes been referred to as “Chinese yoga”. Qigong is typically translated as “energy cultivation” and the exercises involve learning effective breathing techniques, improving posture and our capacity for flowing, elegant movement, as well as tuning the mind to feel uplifted, centered, and grounded by deepening our connection to nature and our own spontaneous creativity.
We will explore the foundations of Chinese medicine, Daoist philosophy, and the basis of the more well-known moving meditation practice of tai chi. In this series of classes you will receive training to direct qi (life energy) to improve health and vitality. You will feel stronger physically, spiritually, and emotionally. This class includes a complete workout with standing meditations, coiling, stretching, tendon, and sinew strengthening techniques. We will focus on the first section of Dr. Lee’s Modified Tai Chi for Health as well as a set of crane exercises - one of the most beautiful and transformative of the five animal frolics shamanic qigong system. My purpose is to introduce participants to both tai chi and qigong.
